WATCH: Phish NYE 2016 Petrichor Gag (Design Sketches Too!)

Wow, what a run! The Phish from Vermont have done it again: YEMSG!

Here’s the official pro-shot video of the beginning of the third set featuring the midnight countdown with the gag…

Phish 12/31/16 Set 3: Petrichor > Auld Lang Syne > Suzy Greenberg

with guests James Casey on saxophone, Natalie Cressman on trombone, Jennifer Hartswick on trumpet, Jeff Tanski on keys and Andres Forero on percussion.

Was it their best NYE gag of all time? No. Was it touching and emotive and well-done? Yeah. Would I have preferred a different kind of rain, perhaps a Purple Rain? Absolutely. But if there’s one thing that’s certain it’s that Trey love love loves his new opus Petrichor. And watching him play the song with all his friends and that goofy grin of his, is a fine way to ring in the new year.

I will say that I initially thought the bagged balloons on the ceiling were bagged and covered as to not reveal their PURPLE colors but, hey! Raining cats and dogs is pretty cool too.

Though it seems the designer of the gag, David Gallo, who also designed other Phish NYE gags, initially had other ideas…

Plush dogs and cats!? Inflatables is one thing, but goddamn stuffed dogs and cats meant to evoke the band members!? That’s what I want!

If you thought the Phish NYE stress ball rain drops selling for $25 or more on eBay is a lot, just imagine the demand for a plush Gordo Doggo!

Maybe next year… 😉
